Further to last week’s mail out alerting members about the launch of the Sentencing Review, we are now in a position - following approval at this week’s meeting of Napo's National Executive Committee (NEC) - to detail the process for individuals to have input into Napo’s evidence. The deadline for formal submissions to the review is the 7th January 2025, which means there will be a short window in which to gather the views of our membership in the run up to the festive season and early into next year.

Read more here about the Independent Sentencing Review : https://www.gov.uk/guidance/independent-sentencing-review-2024-to-2025

The seven key themes the call for evidence will explore are:

·      History and trends in sentencing

·      The structure of sentencing

·       The use of technology within sentencing

·       Community sentences

·       Custodial sentences

·       The progression of custodial sentences

·       The individual needs of victims and offenders

How to let us have your views

We need the individual views of our members, specifically on the above themes (ideally no more than 200 words for each) to be sent to your Napo Branch e-mail account no later than Thursday 12th December. Your Branch e-mail account is secure and can be found shown in the list below.

A member of your Branch Executive will then forward your comments directly to Napo HQ, so that the team here can start considering your views as we draft Napo's formal evidence for submission. Please note that we reserve the right to edit any submissions that we receive, especially if they include commentary on issues outside of the required themes.

Separate instructions have been issued to NEC members, National Committee Chairs and Family Court Section on the submission of any evidence that they would like to be considered. If you belong to a Napo Network please send in your views to your Branch e-mail account.

Where to send your views

Please use the email title/subject heading "Sentencing Review ********  Napo Branch" and send it to the relevant e-mail address below. Your name and other personal details will not be included in our formal evidence to the review.

We have designed this response mechanism to make it as easy as possible for you to contribute to this process, while allowing the Napo HQ Team sufficient time to collate our evidence to this important review prior to the formal submission being presented. We are hugely appreciative of your support in this matter, especially given the workload pressures faced by so many of us, and look forward to receiving evidence from as many members as possible.
