First Minister to give speech to trade union members at a meeting of Napo and UNISON in Cardiff

Wales’ First Minister will deliver a keynote speech to trade union members at the Napo Cymru Branch and Unison Cymru annual general meeting in Cardiff on 28th June.
Both Napo and Unison have policies in support of devolution of justice in Wales and believe that this would improve justice services for clients, victims and communities. Ian Lawrence Napo General Secretary said:
“Napo resolved at our last national AGM to fully support the campaign for the devolution of justice in Wales. The justice system is in meltdown as a result of serious under-investment and the damage caused by part-privatisation before it was reunified in 2021. Wales deserves a justice system that is fit for purpose and can properly serve the people of Wales”.
The former Victims Commissioner Vera Baird will also be addressing the AGM alongside Ian Lawrence Napo General Secretary and a Unison National Official.
As well as devolution, it is expected that here will be a big focus on the current staffing and workloads crisis in probation. Some areas are experiencing over 50% staff vacancies and probation staff on average hold caseloads of 150% against the workload measurement tool.
Ian added: “Probation staff have had enough. The current situation is not sustainable for our members and is posing a direct risk to the public as staff are forced to spend less and less meaningful time with clients whilst being swamped by paperwork and administration”.
