The Traveller Movement will host a parliamentary drop-in event on 13th December to launch our new Pre-Sentencing Toolkit: Fair Sentencing for Romani (Gypsy), Roma and Irish Traveller people.
Date: Wednesday 13th December
Time: 14:00 to 16:00
Location: W2 just off Westminster Hall
Romani (Gypsy), Roma and Irish Traveller people are significantly overrepresented in the criminal justice system. They are often refused bail and rarely given community sentences, leading to a reoffending cycle. A lack of understanding and awareness about Romani (Gypsy), Roma and Irish Traveller histories and cultures, combined with misconceptions and unconscious bias, can lead probation officers, magistrates, youth justice officers and judges to consider simply the fact that a person is a member of the Romani (Gypsy), Roma and Irish Traveller ethnicities as a risk factor for flight. Pre-sentence reports should be used as an opportunity to challenge stereotypes and recognise the diversity among Romani (Gypsy), Roma and Irish Traveller people.
Join them to discuss how policy and practice can change to better tackle the issues facing the Romani (Gypsy), Roma and Irish Traveller communities within the criminal justice system.
